Steel rapier with straight cross-guard and cup, pierced with lines of foliage; chased pommel; possibly Spanish; 17th century
Sword with blunt bi-convex blade and sharp point, steel hilt with sharply curved quillons in Spanish style, spiral grip covered with black leather, and oval brass pommel. Blade etched with the initials HI, indicating that it may be one of the three stage swords bought by the young Henry Irving as personal accessories when starting his stage career in 1856. Believed to have been used by Henry Irving as Hamlet.
