Theatre costume

Theatrical ensemble of two cloaks, tunic, under-doublet and boots worn by Henry Irving as Macbeth, Acts I & II, 1888, at the Lyceum, under his own management. Designed by Charles Cattermole. [cloak] Semicircular wool cloak, made from alternating horizontal stripes of tan and deep brown coloured fabric machine stitched together. Unlined. [cloak] Cloak, semicircular, of ribbed silk lined with bright red satin and bordered with small linked plaques of gilt metal. [coat] Coat/tunic; wrap-over, with short sleeves, patterned in brown and maroon relief, with belt-hooks on right hip, and fastening with two straps on right breast. [doublet] Underdoublet; maroon cloth with long sleeves matching tunic, and border of red jewels and metal plaques at neck. [boot] Ankle boot, one of a pair, tan suede with long tongues, two buckles on each side and two pairs of long metal-studded garters attached to the lining of each side. The garters are decorated with a line of buttons, the shanks of most of which pass through a hole in the strap and are anchored with a narrow piece of tape which runs the length of the strap. Some buttons are missing however and have been replaced by sewn on buttons stamped "Our Own Make" and "Excelsior". The garters appear to have fastened at the top with a pair of functional buttons. There is a high tongue in the front and a high point at the back of the ankle. The boots fasten on each side with two buckles and straps.
