A carved pinewood bookcover decorated with gold paint picked out in red, blue and black pigments.

This is the front bookcover from a volume of Tibetan canonical scripture, the Kangyur. The Buddhas represented are the celestial or cosmic Buddhas Ratnasambhava, Akshobhya and Amoghasiddhi, who are seated amid scrollwork on lotus thrones. The Kangyur is regarded as the most sacred Tibetan scripture and forms 108 volumes in total.

Acquired during the British expedition to Tibet of 1904 at Dongtse monastery.
