A Syrian, about 1843. Aloysius Rosarius Amadeus Raymondus Andreas, known as Amadeo, 5th Count Preziosi

A watercolour of a seated man, smoking, in Syrian dress

In an album commissioned from Preziosi by Robert Curzon, now in the British Museum, a version of this watercolour is entitled `A Syrian in the Suite of an Emir.' He may well have been the Emir's secretary, as next to him is a writing box, inlaid with mother-of-pearl.

This drawing is part of a group of 34 bought by the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1907. [D.14-1907-D.47-1907].
