Medal, silver, struck from a die. Obv; PRINCE ALBERT PRESIDENT. Head to right. Signed, W.Wyon, R.A. Rev.: SOCIETY OF ARTS, MANUFACTURES AND COMMERCE FOUNDED 1754- INCORPORATED BY ROYAL CHARTER 1847. A laurel wreath. Signed L.C.WYon. On the edge: AWARDED TO MR. J. KENYON BLACKWELL, F.G.S. FOR HIS PAPER 'ON THE IRON INDUSTRY OF GREAT BRITAIN WITH REFERENCE TO THAT OF OTHER COUNTRIES, 1856.'

The Society of Arts was founded in 1754 and in 1843 Prince Albert was installed as its fifth president.m In 1847 the Society applied for, and was granted its Royal Charter. This medal is an award of the Society and was first used from about the year 1854 replacing an earlier award engraved by William Wyon, the dies for which were, by 1854, worn out.
