Glass sculpture, entitled 'Four seasons', made by Heinrich Wang, Taiwan, 1997
A rectangular block of yellow glass, with four types of plants - chrysanthemum, bamboo, orchid and prunus - issuing from a vase.
This glasswork depicts four plants traditionally associated with the four seasons in China – orchid, bamboo, chrysanthemum and plum blossom. The images are created by employing the ‘negative relief’ technique, an optical trick that enables a concave pattern to ‘pop up’ on the surface.
