Watercolour entitled 'The Sugar Cane Girl' by Carl Haag. British School, 1866.

Watercolour entitled 'The Sugar Cane Girl'. Signed and dated.

During a journey across the Egyptian desert from Cairo to Suez, Carl Haag, a German-born travel artist, painted numerous watercolours of North Africans. This is an example of the work that he produced for the British market. Like in other similar watercolours, Haag has here isolated some picturesque figures who were to convey the idea of Eastern characters.
