Portrait of Giovanni Battista Belzoni, Harry Beard Collection. Giovanni Battista or Baptista Belzoni (1778-1823) was an Italian showman, explorer and archaeologist. He worked as a circus strong man in England, but in 1815 went to Egypt where he developed an interest in archaeology and excavated tombs and temples. Many of his finds are now in the British Museum.
