Prayer stone of dark grey schist carved in low relief with a figure of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara in the form of Sadaksari, Tibet, 19th century

A prayer stone of dark grey schist carved in low relief with a figure of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara in the form of Sadaksari.

Stones such as these, carved either with prayers or Buddhist deities, are made in Tibet as acts of religious devotion. Tibetan Buddhists believe that by doing so they create religious merit. Stones are piled on the top or at the sides of walls that then become religious monuments in their own right.
